What is benznidazole?

Benznidazole is no longer available in the United States.

Benznidazole is one of two drugs used to treat Chagas disease, an illness spread by insects. Benznidazole is a antiparasite medication which is not commercially available in the United States. People with Chagas disease should receive treatment for both the acute phase and for the time when the disease is reactivated after remission. Also, if infants are born with Chagas disease, they should receive treatment.
