What is anisindione?

Anisindione is no longer available in the United States.

Anisindione is a prescription anticoagulant, also known as a blood thinner. Sold under the brand name Miradon, anisindione prevents and treats blood clots in your veins. It is also used to prevent and treat a condition called a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in your lungs, and a condition called a coronary occlusion, which can occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood in your heart. Anisindione works by reducing the levels of certain chemicals in the blood that play a role in the formation of blood clots. Generally, anisindione is only used when a person is unable to take other anticoagulants, such as warfarin, because there is a higher risk of side effects with anisindione.
