What should I know about water for injection before using it?

Use water for injection as directed by your doctor. Do not use the product if it contains tiny particles or if it is discolored in any way.

Do not freeze or heat this product over 150 degrees Fahrenheit (66 degrees Celsius), as it may react to extreme temperatures.

Your pharmacist will make sure any equipment used for mixing medicine is sterile, as unsterilized equipment can cause serious infections.

Never reuse or share needles, as that increases your risk of contracting or spreading diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Ask your doctor how to dispose of used needles properly.

Water for injection must be combined with a solution of medicine before it is injected into the veins. Injection of undiluted water may result in hemolysis, a condition that causes the premature destruction of red blood cells and can lead to complications such as anemia.

If too much water is injected into your body, you may experience serious side effects such as overhydration, congestion, or edema (swelling due to water retention). Some people may even experience life-threatening pulmonary edema, or excessive fluid in the lungs.

Water for injection also contains aluminum, which can have serious effects in people with pre-existing kidney problems or premature infants. In people whose bodies cannot process the amount of aluminum they consume, toxicity of the skeletal or nervous systems may occur.
