You can minimize the side effects of Linzess (linaclotide), a prescription medication used to treat adults with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) or chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) -- chronic constipation that has no clear cause -- by closely following the directions that come with the medicine.
Take Linzess on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, at least half an hour before eating. Take the capsules whole; do not chew or break them open.
Do not take Linzess if you have a blockage in your bowel. Weigh the pros and cons with your doctor of using Linzess if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
Before you take Linzess, give your doctor a complete medical history. Tell him or her about all your other medications (prescription and over-the-counter), as well as any supplements you take.
