How common is diarrhea when taking Linzess?

Diarrhea is the most common side effect of Linzess (linaclotide), a prescription medication used to treat adults with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) or chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) -- chronic constipation that has no clear cause.

In studies of CIC, 16% of patients who took Linzess experienced diarrhea, including 2% with severe diarrhea. In studies of IBS-C, 20% of patients who took Linzess experienced diarrhea, including 2% with severe cases. Most cases of diarrhea occurred during the first two weeks on Linzess.

If you have severe diarrhea when taking Linzess, stop taking it and call your doctor.
