What can my dog teach me about living healthily?

Dogs have a lot to teach us about living a long, healthy and happy life.
  • Take water breaks. Have you ever met a dog that doesn’t drink a lot of water? Staying hydrated is important to our overall health, and most of us don’t do a good enough job. Not only will drinking plenty of water help you maintain a healthy weight, but it also promotes cardiovascular and joint health. Be like man’s best friend, and savor the benefits of plenty of H2O.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff. Dogs have short memories. Instead of getting stressed out that they can’t find their favorite chew toy or someone just stepped on a tail, dogs let things go and move on with their day. It’s harder for us humans to let go of stress, but learning to remove stress from our lives can have a positive effect on our health.
  • Cortisol, the hormone primarily responsible for your body’s stress response, suppresses your immune system. Because of this, you’re more vulnerable to illnesses such as that cold your coworker in the next cubicle picked up last week. Take a cue from your canine pal -- let it roll off your back and go on.
