How can dogs help detect diseases?

It’s known that dogs are sensitive to seizures before they happen in humans, and some dogs have been trained to detect cancer in people. A beagle has even been trained to sniff out the intestinal baceterium C. difficile in stool samples. If other dogs can be trained to perform this type of screening, they may be useful to help control C. difficile outbreaks in hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this particular bacterium causes 14,000 deaths in the U.S. every year.
