How can I learn to take criticism and negative feedback better?

Karen R Koenig
Psychology
What a doozy of a skill for any of us. It’s never fun to hear negative things about yourself. However, it needn’t be a knife in the back either. Listen up, you’re going to do some things well and some things poorly just like the rest of us schmoes. Not every criticism is meant to rip your heart out. Not every insult or piece of criticism is true. The best advice is to remember this adage: If it comes out of someone else’s mouth - even if it has your name attached to it - the sentiment belongs to him or her. It’s that person’s thoughts and feelings, not yours. Of course, you don’t want to tune out all feedback. Self-care means hearing everyone out, then making up your mind yourself whether what is said has validity and value. If so, swell, learn from it. If not, delete it.
