Are there alternative treatments for personality disorders?

No, typically alternative treatments are not effective for personality disorders. The standard treatment involves psychotherapy, which may take years to have an effect. Additionally, most people with personality disorders do not perceive themselves as having a problem. Therapy is needed in order for a therapist to point out repeatedly the negative consequences of their actions. Although there are no alternative therapies, there are a few things someone can do on their own. These include following the treatment plan, taking prescribed medicines as directed, educating themselves about their disorder, knowing and avoiding triggers for symptoms, avoiding drugs and alcohol, staying active to fight depression and weight gain, and getting regular medical care.
