What are the treatment options for peritonitis?

Antibiotics and, in some cases, surgery are the treatments of choice for peritonitis. The degree and type of peritonitis will determine the treatment option. For example, spontaneous peritonitis may be treated differently from dialysis-related peritonitis; the reason why the infection occurred will likely be different in both cases.

Surgery is used when antibiotics alone are not sufficient to treat the peritonitis. Surgery might be necessary for patients with secondary peritonitis because the peritonitis is often caused by body tissue ruptures, such as in appendicitis.

Dialysis patients may need to have a different kind of dialysis done until the infection and the cause of the infection have cleared up.
