Brushing your teeth too hard or too vigorously is one of the most common causes of gum recession. A toothbrush that is too hard can cause gums to wear away, while applying excessive force also can lead to gum recession.
Improper brushing can cause gum recession. Proper brushing consists of using a soft bristle toothbrush and brushing from the gum to the tooth. Avoid a back and forth motion of the toothbrush at the gumline. Other causes of gum recession are orthodontics and gritting and grinding the teeth.
