Graft itself is not painful; the donor site from the palate can be painful. Ask your surgeon to fabricate a surgical stent to protect the roof of your mouth. Sometimes using the topical anesthetic on the roof (donor site) can be very helpful.
Following a gum graft, you may experience discomfort from the wounds near the tooth and on the roof of your mouth. Prescription pain medication should help reduce the discomfort.
