What are receding gums?

When Shakespeare said a man was "long of tooth," he was referring to receding gums in the elderly. In actuality, the bone structure recedes and the gums shrink along with it. This process exposes the root and makes the tooth look longer. It can also result in sensitivity when the teeth are exposed to heat, cold, and sugar.

Periodontal Diseases

With periodontal disease, a serious disease of the gums, there can be bleeding of the gums, redness, inflammation, separation of the gum from the teeth, infections and sometimes loosened teeth. Left untreated, gum disease can eventually lead to loss of bone and teeth.
