What medications help treat gum disease?

Antibiotics are one choice for systemic action.

Topical mouth washes can also have some effectiveness. A very commonly prescribed one is chlorhexidine.

There are some over-the counter mouth washes that may have some effect on plaque. Cetylpyridinium chloride is one such ingredient.

The drawback to some of the mouth washes listed above is that it can stain your teeth. Your dentist or hygienist chould be able to take care of that for you.

Unfortunately, there is no getting around proper brushing and flossing. That is the best preventative measure.
