What should I know about piperacillin before receiving it?

Piperacillin contains sodium and should be used under the supervision of a doctor if you are on a salt-restricted diet. Piperacillin is a penicillin medication, so if you have allergies to penicillin or cephalosporin medications, do not take it. Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease or if you are pregnant or nursing. If you are elderly or have decreased liver function, side effects of piperacillin may be more pronounced.
