What should I know about nafcillin sodium before taking it?

Before taking nafcillin, discuss your complete medical history with your doctor, making sure to include any medications or supplements you are taking and any medical conditions you have ever had. Tell your doctor if you allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins; if you have, or have a history of, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal condition, asthma, or hay fever.

Hormonal birth control may not be as effective when taken with nafcillin, so use a reliable non-hormonal birth control method to prevent pregnancy. Before taking nafcillin, tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.

Repeated or lengthy use of nafcillin increases the risks of a second infection, and may make it more difficult to treat subsequent infections.
