What should I know about oxacillin before receiving it?

If you are allergic to any penicillin medications you should not receive oxacillin, as you may suffer serious, life threatening side effects. Talk to your doctor before receiving oxacillin if you have asthma, liver disease, kidney disease, a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, a history of diarrhea when taking antibiotics or any allergy history. Your dosage of the medication may need to be adjusted or you may need to undergo special tests to determine if you can receive oxacillin.

If you feel you have received an overdose of oxacillin, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose include: confusion, behavior changes, severe skin rash, diminished urination and seizures or black-out convulsions.

If you are taking birth control be aware that oxacillin will reduce the efficacy of your birth control, which may result in pregnancy. Before taking oxacillin, let your doctor know if you are using birth control. Oxacillin can pass through breast milk and may be harmful to a breastfeeding baby or an unborn child.
