What is the quadriceps (Q) angle?

Scott D. Martin, MD
Orthopedic Surgery
It's not obvious, but your thighbone and your shin bone are not aligned in a straight line. The line of the femur and the line extending from the ankle through the kneecap form what is known as the Q-angle. Women usually have a more pronounced Q-angle than men (knock-kneed) and, as a result, may be more susceptible to tears in the anterior cruciate ligament.

The Q angle is an angle created between the hips, knee cap and tibial tuberosity (bump on the front of the tibia). The average male Q angle is 10 degrees, and average female Q angle is 15 degrees.
