What is the follow-up care for deep brain stimulation surgery?

Most patients are in the hospital for two to three days for the procedure. We do not turn the device on for about a month after surgery to allow the brain to heal and settle. Patients are back on their original medications until we turn the device on. The initial programming involves choosing the best contact points and finding the right settings. In general, this may take two to four visits. We may reduce medications if symptoms are particularly well controlled. Once the proper settings are found we ask patients to follow up initially every two to three months, although we can spread visits out to every six months or once a year for patients who are very stable. Under most circumstances, patients resume their normal level of activity and, in many cases, are able to increase it if good symptom control is achieved as expected.

After deep brain stimulation surgery, patients have a follow-up visit after two weeks, and the device is turned on four weeks after surgery.
