How long do the effects of deep brain stimulation last?

We don’t know how long the effects of deep brain stimulation last, because the surgery has only been in effect for about 15 years as an FDA-approved technique. What we can tell you is from a motor perspective, there are people who have had these stimulators for over 10 years now and continue to get the benefit. There are many aspects of Parkinson’s disease, and so many people develop other symptoms of Parkinson’s disease that aren’t helped with the stimulator, but from a motor perspective, we know that there are people who can benefit for at least 10 years, if not greater.
