How does cognition affect treatment for Parkinson’s disease?

The reason why we care about cognition is because dementia can actually be a much more impairing problem than movement disorders. So if we see someone who has a movement problem and it’s not controlled by medications, but they’re actually well toward dementia, we think twice about surgery. Dementia is going to be a bigger issue for them than the movement, and we don’t want to introduce more problems with the surgery.
