How can I make travel comfortable for my baby?

Nicole H. Gorton, MD
Pediatrics
If you are traveling on a plane with your baby, take something for your baby to drink or chew on during takeoff and landing. This should help minimize some of the air pressure issues. Consider what time zone you’re visiting. You might consider shifting the baby’s sleep schedule beforehand or keeping it the same during the trip. Keep in mind that this could lead to some early mornings or late nights, depending on which direction you’re traveling.

If you’re going by car, set up a sunshade -- too much sun can hurt your baby's eyes and skin and make him too hot.

It is also a good idea to put together a survival kit. Think of it as an extended diaper bag with medications and a listing (in paper form and in your mobile phone for back-up) of your child’s medical history, allergies, etc.

If you’re going somewhere warm and exotic, be sure to keep your baby covered with clothing and use sunscreen.

Make sure you have enough diapers, changes of clothes and solid food (if applicable). Bring a few favorite toys as well.

Always have a car seat ready. And bring a portable stroller, sling or both. Hotels often have cribs upon request; don’t forget to ask.
