What are the risk factors for getting Chagas disease?

People who live in Central or South America are at greater risk for Chagas disease. The disease is spread by triatomine bugs, a type of reduvid bug, that lives in the walls of huts in villages where the poverty rate is high. People living under these conditions are at risk. If you have had a blood transfusion from any person who carries the parasite, you are more at risk to become infected. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns about infection.
