Person-to-person contact can spread some types of protozoan infection. It usually requires exposure to an infected person's blood. The condition can be spread by a tainted blood transfusion or when sharing a needle with someone infected. It is far more common, though, to get a protozoan infection through contact with a biting insect than by catching it from another human being.
