How common is parasitic gastrointestinal infection?

The incidence of parasitic gastrointestinal infection is highly dependent on the geographical region under consideration. In countries of the developing world such as Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin and South America, intestinal parasite infection is very common. Parasitic gastrointestinal infection is far less common in the countries of the developed world such as the United States. Even so, these infections still occur in the US. Among populations with weakened immune systems in developed countries, the incidence rate of intestinal parasite infection is significantly higher.
