Is Chagas disease a concern for the United States?

Chagas disease is caused by a parasite that is most likely found in Central or South America. This parasite, called Trypanosoma cruzi, is related to the African trypanosome that is known to cause sleeping sickness. This parasite is spread by reduvid bugs. It is a major health issue in South America. The United States may be affected by this disease because of international travel and immigration. Since 2007, many blood banks in the United States have been screening for Chagas disease.
