For instance, if your parent or sibling has schizophrenia, you will have a 10% chance of having it as well. Most people in the world only have a 1% chance of having schizophrenia. Scientists are interested in identifying other causes of schizophrenia. They believe that early life experiences in the womb may cause brain changes that eventually lead to schizophrenia. Early drug use, trauma during childhood, and having a father who is older than average also may contribute to development of paranoid schizophrenia.
