Most cases of chronic pancreatitis have no known cause. Alcoholism is the most common of the known causes. Some people also have a family history of the disease, which may increase their risk. Other conditions that may contribute to chronic pancreatitis include:
- gallstones;
- hyperparathyroidism;
- cancer of the pancreas;
- acute pancreatitis.
