The most common symptom of chronic pancreatitis is pain in the abdomen that may be severe and last for hours or days. The individual may lose weight for no apparent reason and have trouble digesting food. They may notice oily stools as well. Eventually, a person may develop diabetes because of damage to the cells in the pancreas that control insulin production.
Symptoms of chronic pancreatitis include:
• Abdominal and/or back pain
• Weight loss
• Nausea and vomiting
• Onset of diabetes mellitus
• Pale colored, oily stools
Symptoms may develop over a period of time without the sudden dramatic occurrence of an acute attack. However, those with undiagnosed chronic pancreatitis may develop acute episodes.
