Does pancreatitis affect men differently than women?

Both acute and chronic pancreatitis has been shown to affect men more often than women. The most common causes of acute pancreatitis are gallstones and alcoholism. The most common cause of chronic pancreatitis is alcoholism. Men are six times more likely to have pancreatitis caused by alcoholism than women. However, women are nearly twice as likely to have acute pancreatitis that is brought on by gallstones.
