Can chronic pancreatitis be prevented?

The cause of most cases of chronic pancreatitis is unknown. Of the known causes, the most common is alcoholism. Individuals can help prevent this serious, irreversible condition by not drinking alcohol. Other causes include gallstones, hyperparathyroidism, cancer, acute pancreatitis, and heredity. By adopting a low-fat diet, you may decrease the likelihood of gallstones and the risk of chronic pancreatitis. Since the condition is irreversible, early treatment can minimize the damage to the pancreas.
