What is stage 2 pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer is a cancer of the pancreas, a small organ found behind your stomach. In pancreatic cancer, cancer cells form a tumor in the pancreas, which interferes with the normal function of the organ and may spread to other parts of the body.

The pancreas is part of the digestive system, making enzymes needed for digestion. It also produces hormones that help your body use sugars. In stage 2 pancreatic cancer, the tumor has spread beyond the pancreas. If the cancer is stage 2A, it has spread to the areas of the body near the pancreas, but has not been found in the lymph nodes. If the cancer is stage 2B pancreatic cancer, it has spread to the lymph nodes, either in addition to or instead of spreading to other organs near the pancreas.

In stage II, cancer may have spread to nearby organs but does not involve local blood vessels or distant parts of the body. This stage is also divided into two stages, stage IIA and IIB based on local lymph node involvement. Lymph nodes are where infection-fighting cells are produced and stored and are found all over the body.

Stage IIA: Cancer has not spread to local lymph nodes but has spread to nearby organs and tissue

Stage IIB: Cancer has spread to local lymph nodes and may have spread to nearby organs and tissue
