What are the treatments for surgical incision pain and numbness?

Stuart A. Linder, MD
Plastic Surgery
For the majority of surgical incision pain no treatment is indicated. The majority of surgical scars will heal with pain resolution over 6 weeks. However, thick hypertrophic and keloid scars may require steroid injection (kenalog) to reduce collagen and collagenase activity, thus reducing pain. Numbness normally resolves over 1 year after new neuronal regeneration through the scar. For example, it may take up to 16 months after a cesarean section for sensation to reappear fully.
