How do medications treat pain?

Analgesics, or pain relievers, essentially numb pain until it goes away. Over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin work well for moderate pain and usually last 4 to 6 hours. Opioid and nonopioid analgesics are for people with severe pain. These medications require a prescription from your doctor and can have strong side effects.
