How does a physical exam diagnose phantom limb pain?

Because phantom limb pain does not usually have external causes, doctors do not usually heavily rely on physical examinations to diagnose phantom limb pain. Doctors usually diagnose the condition based on a careful report of symptoms from the affected person. However, it is important to distinguish phantom limb pain from stump pain when possible. A physical examination of the stump in combination with a symptom and history report can usually do this effectively. In cases where there is no obvious cause of stump pain, it may be successfully treated similiarly to phantom limb pain.
