Referred pain occurs when the nerves that surround your joints or discs become irritated to the point that they affect a distant area. In this situation, the pain is felt at -- or referred to -- other locations. Typically, only a small portion of a surrounding nerve is affected, so only a small portion of a distant extremity feels pain. In essence, joint or disc irritation of the surrounding nerves is stimulating or referring pain from one place to another.
