How can a pacemaker or ICD sometimes cause cardiac arrhythmias?

Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators, or ICDs, use special wires called leads to deliver energy from these devices to the heart muscle. If the leads do not work properly, a person with such a device may suffer from arrhythmias, so the lead may need to be removed. Leads can malfunction, become infected, or become surrounded by a buildup of scar tissue, reducing an implant’s efficacy.
