When can I stop taking OxyContin?

Doctors prescribe OxyContin (oxycodone) for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. When your pain has subsided or gone away, you probably don't need OxyContin any longer. However, don't stop taking OxyContin before talking with your doctor. He or she will likely advise you to gradually reduce your dose. In some cases, abruptly giving up OxyContin can trigger withdrawal symptoms, such as aches, chills and sweating.
