Can radiation treatments contribute to overactive bladder?

Both men and women who have had radiation treatments may develop overactive bladder. However, men are usually more at risk. This is because radiation is often used for prostate conditions. This can include prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). The radiation can cause temporary or permanent bladder control problems. These men often have stress incontinence. This is when urine leaks due to movement or pressure. Overactive bladder can also develop when radiation affects the pelvis.
