Ovarian germ cell tumors may release substances called tumor markers into your blood. These are generally not used in isolation to diagnose ovarian germ cell tumors, although they can be used as tools to determine subtype and prognosis. A fetoprotein (AFP) is generally elevated in those with yolk sac tumors and it may be elevated in those with immature teratomas, mixed germ cell tumors, or embryonal carcinoma. B human chorionic gonadotropin (B HCG) is generally elevated in those with polyembryomas, embryonal carcinomas, and choriocarcinoma. It may be elevated in those with mixed germ cell tumors or in those with dysgerminomas.
