What research is being done on ovarian cancer screenings?

Gustavo Rodriguez, MD
Gynecologic Oncology

The United Kingdom has been one of the huge pioneers in research on ovarian cancer screenings. They are doing a huge study, following a very large number of women with a screening algorithm, and are trying to look at overall outcomes for their group.

Some of their preliminary data suggested that in a large screened population, the outcomes in general are a little bit better in those who had ovarian cancer. Presumably, they found some early, and maybe some were found when the cancer wasn’t so advanced.

Because of this study, in women at average risk, doctors will not recommend using CA-125.
