How can diet affect my risk of ovarian cancer?

William W. Li, MD
Internal Medicine

What you eat can lower your risk of developing ovarian cancer, says diet and disease prevention specialist Dr. William Li. To learn which foods are best for preventing ovarian cancer, watch this video.

Your diet can affect your risk of ovarian cancer by helping reduce your risk for the disease. For example, a diet high in citrus fruits and juices and black tea may help reduce your risk of developing epithelial ovarian cancer. These fruits contain specific types of flavonoids, or plant chemicals, that may have a protective benefit. In a study of the dietary habits of more than 170,000 women for more than three decades, those who consumed foods and beverages high in flavonoids known as flavonols and flavanones, such as black tea and citrus fruits and juices, had a significantly lower risk of epithelial ovarian cancer. In fact, just drinking two cups of black tea a day was beneficial.
