Who should not take ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone?

If you are allergic to any of the antibiotics in the drug class called the fluoroquinolones or any of the anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids, you should tell your doctor before taking ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone (Ciprodex).

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their doctor before taking. The FDA has rated the safety of ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone (Ciprodex) as a "Category C."

Some of the most common fluoroquinolone antibiotics in the US include:

  • Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
  • Levofloxacin (Levaquin)
  • Moxifloxacin (Avelox)
  • Norfloxacin (Noroxin)
  • Ofloxacin (Floxin)

Some of the most common anti-inflammatory corticosteroids are listed below. Please note that the anti-inflammatory corticosteroids are in a different drug class than the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen or naproxen. Many of these are used in combination products for the ears or eyes.

  • Dexamethasone (Decadron)
  • Hydrocortisone (Cortaid, Cortef, Cortizone, Hytone)
  • Prednisone  (Prednisone Intensol)
  • Prednisolone (Econopred Plus, Isolone, Omnipred, Pred Forte, Pred Mild)
