What are some obstacles in treating rare diseases?

To cover the expenses of research and development, pharmaceutical companies often place high price tags on orphan drugs-which many uninsured people cannot afford. Some rare diseases also require treatment in another country or state. This imposes additional financial burdens, and insurance programs frequently place strict limits on such treatment.

However, there are advocacy groups, such as the National Organization for Rare Disorders, who play an important role in helping patient get access to treatments they need for productive and full lives.
