Can osteonecrosis be prevented?

Osteonecrosis can be caused by prolonged use of corticosteroids. In order to prevent this from happening, these medications should be prescribed only when absolutely necessary. Even at these times, they should be prescribed in as low a dose as will be effective and for as short a period as possible. The risk of osteonecrosis from decompression sickness can be reduced by following standard rules for decompression. Osteonecrosis can also be prevented by reducing alcohol intake and stopping smoking.
