How does physical therapy help relieve osteoarthritis symptoms?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)

Physical therapy with a trained physical therapist (PT) can be helpful for relieving osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms. PTs are specialists at helping restore or maintain physical function, so their job is to get you moving, reduce pain, restore function and, perhaps most importantly, prevent disability. This way, you can continue to lead an independent life.

By working with a physical therapist, you can learn ways to strengthen the muscles around your sore joints, improve their range of motion and manage any limitations you may have from your OA. Your PT will also work with you to develop a personalized exercise program.

Physical therapy (PT) can help relieve the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis (OA) by increasing the strength in the muscles surrounding the painful joints, increasing your range of motion and making it easier for you to perform daily tasks.

A physical therapist can help you design an exercise program that’s safe for you, teach you how to exercise correctly and provide supportive devices, like a brace or splint, that can ease the pain of your symptoms. The PT can also advise you on proper stretching techniques and on ways to improve your posture, which can also help minimize the symptoms of OA.
