What complications are associated with getting metal braces?

Complications of metal braces include tooth decay and gum disease. Food and bacteria can get trapped in the metal brackets and cause gum disease and tooth decay. Your orthodontist can recommend products to help clean your teeth. Water picks may be helpful.

Wire or metal brackets can poke the inside of your cheeks or lips. If this happens, cover the wire with dental wax and see your dentist.

Avoid hard foods and candy, which may damage your invisible braces.

If not given the proper aftercare, teeth can easily revert to their misaligned positions. Follow your dentist's instructions after you get your braces removed to prevent your teeth from shifting back.
