What are titanium braces?

Gregory J. Jorgensen, DMD
Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics
Braces can be manufactured out of many different materials. Clear braces are made from porcelain, plastic, or composite. Metal braces are usually made from stainless steel, but other metals can be used. One of these is titanium. Titanium is more flexible than stainless steel and it "gives" a little more when forces are placed upon it by orthodontic wires or outside forces like biting into food. Orthodontic manufacturers claim that braces made out of titanium stay on the teeth better because they bend rather than being dislodged. At a normal viewing distance, titanium braces look exactly like other metal braces. Up close, they are just a little less shiny.
