How do I know if I need a clear plastic dental retainer?

Only your orthodontist can tell if a dental retainer is right for you. Most people are instructed to wear a retainer for a period of time after their braces are taken off. If you have gaps between your teeth or a tongue thrust (a condition in which your tongue pokes through your teeth when you talk), you may need to wear a retainer.

People with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), a condition in which the teeth don’t meet when the jaws are closed, or those who grind their teeth may benefit from a dental retainer.
