The actual fitting of braces takes about 45 minutes. It is usually done on a second or third visit after the orthodontist has taken x-rays of your teeth and made a mold of them to assess the bite of your upper and lower teeth. Braces of any type, including those made of metal, are typically worn one to three years, and sometimes longer when teeth are more severely crooked and misaligned. After the braces are removed, many people must continue to wear a retainer to hold teeth in their new position for six months or longer.
